Privacy policy
Last updated 16 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Great Plates collects, why, and what we do with it. We follow the Privacy Act 2020 in New Zealand and, for Australian customers, the Australian Privacy Principles.
What we collect
- Listing details you give us when you list a plate: the plate, its region, price and photos, and your name, email and phone number (if you give it).
- Order details when you pay a listing fee or buy a plate from us: your name, contact details and what you bought. Card payments are handled by our payment provider. We don't see or store your full card number.
- Messages you send through our contact and story forms.
- Preferences stored in your browser, such as your country and plate style, and a visitor token that keeps checkout working.
What's public
The details in your listing, including the name, email, phone number and region you choose to give, are shown publicly so buyers can contact you, including after it's marked as sold, until the listing is taken down. Don't include anything you don't want published. The sale price you tell us when you mark it sold isn't published.
How we use it
- To publish and display your listing.
- To process payments and send receipts.
- To complete transfers of plates sold by Great Plates.
- To answer messages and deal with reported listings.
Who we share it with
- with NZTA, or the relevant Australian state registry, to transfer a plate sold by Great Plates
- with our website and payment providers, who store and process data for us
- when the law requires it.
We don't sell your personal information.
Where it's stored
Our website runs on Wix, and some information may be stored on servers outside New Zealand. We use providers that protect personal information to standards comparable to New Zealand law.
How long we keep it
Listings come down when they expire. We keep other information for as long as we need it for the purposes above, and to meet our legal and tax obligations. After that we delete it.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to take down your listing. Contact us and we'll respond within 20 working days.
If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, tell us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand, or the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Changes
We may update this policy. The version on this page applies from the date shown above.
